Being a Tourist Doesn’t Have to Break You

By Ken Morris

With the economy as it is today, many families are struggling financially. Some are just barely getting by financially. If you’re like many of these people, the idea of a family vacation probably sounds way out of reach, if not totally impossible. There are ways you can still take a family vacation regardless of your financial status. Many place offer package holidays where everything is included in the package price. While these can often be very reasonable, they’re usually not the cheapest way to go.

Once you’ve decided to take a family vacation, take your time searching for just the right one. Do not choose a vacation based on the cheap price. If this is your family vacation, you want it to be special and memorable. Decide what you want to do and where you want to go first. Once that’s decided, you can start researching different hotels, restaurants, beaches, water parks, amusement parks that your selected destination offers. This is where you can begin to save money. Keep in mind that you’re going to be a tourist, but you can be a financially smart tourist with a little practice.

If the beach is something the whole family will enjoy, some popular beaches are perfect for the budget-minded vacationers. Some of these are Long Beach, Pensacola Beach and Virginia Beach for starters. An overseas beach such as in Alicante or Barcelona, or Caribbean beach would be awesome, but airfare would probably take you off your budget.

If a sport like golfing is something that would interest you, golf courses like Myrtle Beach, Scottsdale and Newport Beach are great. Travel agents and golf companies offer resort packages, which often are a great price. Some of the packages include travel, hotels, golfing and dining. These are great options, but may not be the cheapest. Do some research online to find golf courses that will allow you to play on their course even if you’re not staying in their resorts. There are plenty of these.

Theme parks are very popular vacation choices for families, but many them park packages can be very expensive if you don’t shop around. Don’t pay for things you will not be using. If you are not going to fly to your destination, you don’t want to pay for airfare as part of your package. You may want to look for cheaper hotels as well. There are very expensive theme parks or cheaper ones that your kids will love just as much. Do a lot of research online for what you want to do and check out reviews.

You may find if you plan your own vacation, this will give you the best chance of saving money. Look for affordable hotels along your destination as well as cheap but nourishing restaurants. Often buying food that you can prepare yourself easily can save a lot. The smarter the shopper you are, the better your vacation can be. Good luck Shopping!
